On 24 September 2017 we will open our exhibition “Approach” in the gallery “Die Erste Etage” in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg. The photo documentation of the Balinese photographer Rudi Waisnawa shows the suffering and the path to healing of mentally ill people in this Southeast Asian country. The exhibition will be opened by Dr. Cokorda Bagus Jaya Lesmana, psychiatrist on the island of Bali.
As there is no adequate inpatient care for the mentally ill in Indonesia that accords them some modicum of dignity, many families choose to care for their sick relatives at home. However, since family members in the poorer section of the population almost always have to work and the patients sometimes tend to behave aggressively, mentally ill people are often locked away or tied up.
With this exhibition the Cordts Foundation would like to draw attention to the new treatment approaches offered by the psychiatrist Luh Ketut Suryani from the Suryani Institute for Mental Health.
All proceeds from the sale of the photos and all donations go directly to the Suryani Institute for Mental Health, Bali, Indonesia.
The opening reception for the exhibition is scheduled for Sunday, 24 September 2017 at 3:00 pm.
